From my research it seems that ffmpeg runs when transcoding different file types, and mp4 is the most light weight. Unfortunately a lot of my library is, in fact, not mp4.... Also, my media is on a drive connected to the Pi, so yes I could disconnect and hook it to my PC for more performance, but I'd rather avoid that if at all possible.
